What Is The Zimbabwe Exemption Permit?
The Zimbabwean Exemption Permit was established to take over from the previous ZSP that expired in 2017. The permit itself allows Zimbabweans to study, work, and do business in the country under the conditions of their exemption.
Are You Eligible For The ZEP?
Not every Zimbabwean hoping to work or study in South Africa qualifies for a ZEP. The latest extension applies to existing ZEP holders; it is not a passport or a general new-application programme. Check the Home Affairs directive and the conditions that apply to your permit.

If you already hold a ZEP, follow Home Affairs’ current instructions for permit holders. If you do not hold one, check the immigration category that fits your circumstances rather than assuming that the existing-holder extension makes you eligible for a ZEP.
Is The ZEP Permit Being Renewed?
The Department of Home Affairs has extended the validity of existing Zimbabwean Exemption Permits to 28 May 2027 under Minister’s Immigration Directive No. 21 of 2025. You can read the official notice for the conditions of the extension.
This replaces the old 31 December 2023 deadline quoted in earlier guidance. As a ZEP holder, check the current official instructions before making travel or application plans.
