Cyril Ramaphosa Education Trust Bursary Application Guide
The Cyril Ramaphosa Education Trust (CRET) is a bursary programme under the Cyril Ramaphosa Foundation. This bursary aims to fund South African students seeking to pursue an undergraduate degree in one of the accredited institutions of higher learning in South Africa and do not otherwise have the means to pay for their studies themselves.
This programme had grown by leaps and bounds from the initial five students studying towards business degrees that it sponsored initially when it began to funding 65 qualifying students in 2017. It can be distinguished from other bursaries because, unlike most bursaries and scholarships, the CRET bursary aims to recruit and fund students who are not necessarily top achievers but students who show a substantial amount of promise and are likely to flourish under the necessary support and guidance.
The bursary covers tuition fees, accommodation costs, a book allowance, stationery costs and a personal stipend. More costs may be covered, depending on the needs of the student. Besides financial assistance, the CRET bursary also offers mentorship, psychological and social assistance. Students are also exposed to amazing opportunities such as holiday work experience twice a year where they can apply the knowledge they have learned at school and have the opportunity to network. The bursary fund is also different from other bursaries. It encourages students who have studied through it to “pay it forward” by mentoring new students and contributing financially if they are in a position to do so. This allows the students to understand social responsibility and create a warm and supportive environment.
The requirements students must meet to be eligible for the Cyril Ramaphosa Education Trust bursary are:
– They must be South African citizens currently living in South Africa and with a valid ID number.
– They must be between the ages of 16 and 30 and have an interest in pursuing a degree in one of the accredited institutions of higher learning in South Africa.
– Be academically strong and in financial need.
– Part-time and distance students are welcome to apply provided they meet all the requirements.
– Students who would like to enrol in a programme recognised as a scarce skill.
– Students on other bursaries wishing to supplement their allowances.
– The academic programme they wish to study is no longer than five years.
